When I log on to the Usenet and view pics, are they stored on the hard drive
anywhere? I know the internet uses a temp folder that can be accessed, I
just wondered how it works here.

They are stored inside your mailbox.

Are they accessable other than viewing them in the newsreader? Are they
stored in a folder on my hard drive?

Nope, they aren't

They stored as files while you're previewing a message. Then that cache gets
deleted.

Thaey are stored in a database file with the extension DBX

The file locality can be determined by...
tools --> options --> maintenance --> store folder

Since you access THIS News Group, you should have a file called...
gmane.network.fidolook.dbx

Since they are compressed into a database format, only the OE client (or in this case
FidoLook using the OE DLL files) can open the associated DBX files and view their individual
records and fields.

That is not so hopeless :)
I believe many other mail programs can import that database.

And there is non very comfort way using wcx plugin from www.totalcmd.net
